Abstract

The provision of adequate space for the parking of automobiles is one of the major problems now confronting cities. This problem is particularly acute in central business districts. With its variety of shops and stores, services and offices, the downtown business area is the hub of retail and other commercial activities and the focus of vehicular traffic. In order to function satisfactorily, this area must not only be accessible from all parts of the community and of its surrounding trade territory, but it must also be convenient f rom the standpoint of circulation and parking. Otherwise, the central district will meet ever-growing competition from new shopping centers constructed in outlying sections and in the local area there is also the existing competition between the several local business districts.
