Abstract
Iowa supports a wide diversity of native furbearer species including badger (Taxidea taxus), beaver (Castor canadensis), bobcat (Lynx rufus), coyote (Canis latrans), mink (Mustela vison), muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus), opossum (Didelphis virginiana), river otter (Lutra canadensis), raccoon (Procyon lotor), striped (Mephitis mephitis) and spotted (Spilogale putorius) skunk, red (Vulpes vulpes) and gray (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) fox, and weasel (Mustela spp.). Data regarding population trends for these species is important for effectively evaluating management efforts and the status of furbearer species, statewide. Long-term population data for many furbearer species is difficult to obtain and often lacking at a landscape-scale.
