Abstract

The summer of 2003, the Iowa DOT constructed a 88m span, basket-handle arch pedestrian bridge over Interstate 235 near the Botanical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. The precast, posttensioned concrete deck system used on this bridge represents perhaps the first application of precast, segmental construction on the Iowa highway system. The concrete deck panels on this bridge are suspended from the steel arch ribs using 1.5 inch diameter high strength steel rods.
