Abstract

SUPERP A VE (Superior Performing Asphalt Pavements) is the product of the Strategic Highway Research Program's (SHRP) $50 million investment in asphalt research. Unlike the current empirical Marshall mix design system, Superpave is a comprehensive method, based on performance characterizations tailored to project specific traffic, environment, and pavement structure. Because Superpave considers the interaction of traffic, climate, and pavement structure in the design process, it is a design procedure truly integrated into a single system. The three main components of the system are the asphalt binder specification, the mixture design and analysis system, and computer software programs.
