Abstract
Transportation planning was oriented toward long-range, capital intensive highway programs designed to improve urban mobility. Today, however, the cost of constructing new transportation facilities, combined with an awareness of environmental problems (i.e. air pollution, energy consumption) has lead to a recognition that more efficient use needs to be made of existing transportation facilities.
