Abstract
The first transportation service in Clinton, Iowa was inaugurated by the Clinton and Lyons Horse Company in 1859 and in 1865 the line was extended to the length of Camanche Avenue in Clinton. In 1889 the street car line was electrified. At the same time, a battle for the franchise developed between The Lyons and Clinton Horse Railway Company and the Electric Company, which was controlled by a group of Clinton citizens. The State Electric Company absorbed the other company and continued to operate the street car system until 1903, when it was sold to the Clinton Street.
