Abstract

The Avenue of the Saints corridor is a major transportation link connecting St. Paul, Minn., and St. Louis, Mo. The route is intended to boost economic development in Iowa, Missouri and Minnesota, and also to provide a major north-south corridor for neighboring Illinois and Wisconsin. The total length of the A venue of the Saints is 536 miles, with 270 of those miles in Iowa. In 1996 the Iowa Transportation Commission designated the A venue of the Saints corridor as a "high priority" corridor. In doing so, the commission placed an emphasis on improving and completing a four-lane highway in this corridor by the year 2004. This corridor is included in the state's Commercial and Industrial Network (CIN). Highways in the CIN are considered vital links for services and the movement of raw materials and consumer goods. The goal in designating a highway as part of this network is to make travel more convenient, safe and efficient; improve the flow of commerce; and better connect Iowa with regional, national and international markets.
