Abstract

To provide Iowa’s veterans with the level of transportation they require, the Iowa DOT Office of Public Transit sees several opportunities for coordination between the local public transit agencies and the local veterans organizations. Further analysis of the survey data will identify those areas of the state unserved by veterans transportation providers where public transit may be able to help fill that gap for both medical and non-medical trips alike. Statewide, with the veterans transportation providers offering only non-emergency medical transportation, there are opportunities for all public transit agencies to make their services and hours known to these organizations to enable veterans to access employment, shopping, and social events. Nearly 100% of Iowa’s public transit vehicles are ADA-accessible.
