Abstract
Of the 72 species or subspecies of mammals reported from Iowa, 60 still exist in the state, although a few are sporadic visitors (Bowles, 1975). The remainder, mainly large herbivores or large carnivores, have become extirpated through persecution by European man as he settled the state. A few became extirpated or nearly so, but have become abundant through good game management; beaver and white-tailed deer are examples.
