Abstract
The objectives of this study were to obtain some fundamental knowledge of the sodium montmorillonite - water system from successive adsorption-desorption isotherms of water vapor on the montmorillonite, and from x-ray diffraction data obtained during adsorption and desorption. More fundamental knowledge of the clay-water system is essential for understanding and predicting the soil mechanics behavior of clays.
