Who is the Fairest of Them All?

Iowa’s courts and legal system have moved up the ranks to become the third fairest in the nation. The state ranked fifth last year.

A Harris Interactive survey for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce polled 928 corporate attorneys in companies with annual revenues of at least $100 million and asked them to grade the state courts.

States were graded on treatment of class action suits, punitive damages, timeliness of summary judgment/dismissal, discovery, scientific and technical evidence, judges’ impartiality and competence, and juries’ fairness and predictability.

Midwestern states took the majority of top scores, with Nebraska, South Dakota and Indiana also ranking in the top five. Delaware was the number-one state in the nation for fairness.
