 With economic growth as the focus of his second term, Governor Tom Vilsack has appointed Michael T. Blouin as the new director of the Iowa Department of Economic Development (IDED). His charge from the governor is to energize Iowa's economy with higher-paying jobs and business start-ups.

University Researchers Developing Dental Simulator

 Haptic, or touch-sensitive, computer simulators that will help train dental students to elicit and recognize the sensations in a dentist's fingertips are being developed at the University of Iowa's Center for Computer-Aided Design. University of Iowa professor and researcher Geb Thomas has received a $330,225 award from the National Science Foundation for the project.

Des Moines Arts Festival Named Nearly the Best in U.S.
 The Des Moines Arts Festival, one of Iowa's largest community events, has been named the sixth best fine arts festival in the nation, up from seventh last year. The ranking publication, the ArtFair SourceBook, is the preeminent annual guide to the best arts festivals and craft fairs in the country. The festival has climbed from 117th in 1998 to its current sixth place ranking for the 2003 show.
