Abstract
Iowa’s independent meat lockers and processors are facing unprecedented challenges right now. Like many businesses, lockers and community meat processors are facing significant workforce shortages which have only been compounded since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020. Not only are they often lacking skilled staff, or workers in general, but they are also confronting extraordinary demand for the high-quality products and services they offer at a time when supply chains are strained. During the 2021 session of the Iowa General Assembly, legislation was passed aimed at addressing these challenges head on. A grant program was created to provide financial assistance for existing lockers and community meat processors to renovate or upgrade existing facilities, or to help Iowans establish new businesses.
