Abstract
The Des Moines historical survey covers the various threads of activity, both individual and collective, that form the fabric of the city. In addition, the important buildings that illustrate or call attention to,those factors that make up Des Moines are identified and evaluated. The,text covering diverse historical themes and more than 240 forms describing the historic structures that still stand are the principal, products of the eleven-month research project. The study began with certain assumptions, the paramount one being that Des Moines has been the center of Iowa since the nineteenth century. The range, circumstances and, in some cases, reasons for the city's eminence formed the framework for detailed research.
