Abstract

Obesity status reflects both individual health status and society-level aspects that are made up of social determinants of health. Individual determinants include genetics, behaviors such as physical activity and dietary patterns, and other exposures. Society-level determinants include the built environment such as sidewalks, parks and grocery stores in a community, social marketing, education and skills. Obesity is a serious health risk due to it's association with poorer physical and mental health outcomes and reduced quality of life. Obesity is also associated with the leading causes of death in the United States and worldwide, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and some types of cancer.
