Abstract
Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, or AAPIs, are a growing, diversifying, and driving force in the Hawkeye State. According to 2013 data from the U.S. Census Bureau, approximately 65,000 Iowa residents identified as being Asian alone, comprising 2.1 percent of Iowa’s population and marking a 72.8 percent increase from 2000. Likewise, the population of Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islanders (NHPI) has also grown. In 2013 over 3,000 Iowa residents identified as being NHPI alone, making up 0.1 percent of the state population and signifying a 172.8 percent increase from 2000. In total, there are more than 68,000 Iowa residents identifying as Asian and NHPI. According to a projection made by Woods & Poole Economics, Inc., Iowa’s combined AAPI population in 2040 will grow to 106,000.
