Abstract

This Iowa Optional Schools Directory were collected through a two-stage survey prepared by a committee of Optional School Directors (see Title Page, preceding) and disseminated by the Drake University College of Education. In the first stage a preliminary survey form was mailed to each Superintendent, each building Principal and each Guidance Counselor in Iowa'e 449 school districts. That instrument gave a brief definition of optional schools and asked the reader to respond with the name and address of a contact person if such a program existed in that locale. A mail-back form and return envelope were included. Almost 900 responses were received. Sixty-one schools and nine programs were mentioned.
