Abstract
The following dialogue is intended to outline the major points of the Iowa Department of Public Instruction's efforts to assess a representative sample of public school pupils .in grades four, seven, and twelve. Assessment activities were conducted during the 1970-71 school year in a total of 83 Iowa school districts. The assessment was confined to the subject matter area of science and the effective areas of attitude toward school and self concept. Funds for assessment activities were made available through federal assistance under Title III of the Elementary-Secondary Education Act of 1965. Such an assessment is required for a state's eligibility under Title III, ESEA.
