Abstract

The first and most important function of these roadsides is the safety of motorists. Yet, rarely do we appreciate or understand the other valuable functions roadsides provide. Drainage channels for runoff, erosion control, wildlife habitats, space for above ground and buried utilities of all kinds, and access to private property are some of the many public purposes served by roadsides. Not all aspects of roadsides go unseen. Each year state, county, municipal and utility officials face such issues as rising maintenance costs; liability exposure from herbicide used to eradicate weeds; unwanted brush growth blocking motorist visibility and access to utilities; unauthorized burning of weeds and grasses; wildlife road-kills; and public complaints of one kind or another.
