Abstract

The purpose of this project was to update Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) design manuals and to include best practices for bicycle and pedestrian facility design and safety. The manuals reviewed were the Iowa Design Manual (IDM), the Iowa Statewide Urban Design and Specifications (SUDAS), the Traffic and Safety Manual (TAS), and the Office of Location and Environment Manual (OLE). A review of best practices related to bicycle and pedestrian design was completed and the manuals were reviewed to identify necessary updates. Sections of each manual and related exhibits were updated or created as necessary to reflect best practices in bicycle and pedestrian design. The draft revisions were provided to Iowa DOT for review and eventual incorporation into their design manuals.
