Abstract
The use of digital information is transforming the way highway infrastructure owners conduct business. Over the last several years, the Iowa DOT has made significant investments to advance the use of 3D modeling technology to deliver projects on a project-by-project basis. The Department has also made investments to advance national efforts and engage with stakeholders to understand the current and future use of digital processes and information; and setting a path for normalizing the use of open data standards to exchange information between disciplines and phases of transportation capital improvement and maintenance projects. The Iowa DOT is now looking to prioritize the next set of activities to continue the advancement and adoption of Digital Delivery and Digital Twins. The objective of this study is to develop a Statewide Strategic Plan that will guide the organization on setting goals and objectives, set expectations and timelines, plan and identify investment needs for specific activities that will transform the organization by optimizing the benefits of implementing digital delivery workflows, and setting up a framework to use digital twins for making data-driven decisions in managing the State Transportation System.
