Abstract
Proper interpretation of these statistical facts, which superficially seem to indicate that the general demand for fuel energy is diminishing, two highly significant trends in fuel consumption must be considered. Briefly stated the first is the moderate but steady improvement in the efficiency of steam power plants which makes possible the production of more and more energy from a given weight of coal and the other is the actual and potential competition of other forms of fuel in all the fields of power generation and heating.
