Abstract
The Pennsylvanian System in Iowa has confronted stratigraphers with serious correlation and nomenclatural problems for many years. Sugnificant portions of the system have remained undifferentiated below group level. Recently several related research projects have culminated in a more complete understanding of the age relationship and lithologic continuity of various portions of the Pennsylvanian sequence in the state.
