Abstract
Coal bearing rocks of Pennsylvanian age underlie about 20,000 square miles, or approximately 36 percent, of the total area of the State of Iowa. Available data permit estimation of coal reserves for about 2, 056 square miles that cannot be quantitatively evaluated but possibly contain coal beds of min able thickness. The coal reserves of Iowa were estimated on an individual bed basis and were classified according to the characteristics of the coal and the abundance and reliability of data.
