Abstract
The Iowa Historic Preservation Tax Credit was enacted in tax year 2000. The tax credit was established to help with the costs of rehabilitating certain historic buildings, to ensure that character-defining features and the spaces of buildings are retained, and to revitalize surrounding neighborhoods. The tax credit equals 25 percent of the qualified rehabilitation expenditures incurred for the substantial rehabilitation of eligible commercial and residential property in Iowa. The annual tax credit award cap is currently $45 million. The Historic Preservation Tax Credit program was modified during the 2016 Legislative session. Since August 15, 2016, this tax credit has been administered by the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
