Abstract

Grass carp were introduced at Red Haw Lake in 1973 to determine their potential in nuisance aquatic vegetation control in a statewide fisheries management program. Knowledge of grass carp at the time was limited to life history studies in their native range and production estimates in food-fish ponds. Most investigations outside their native range were conducted in small, closed systems where the applicability to lakes with vegetation problems was questionable. The primary objective of this investigation was to delineate and quantify vegetation biocontrol in a public fishing lake and to determine the impact of this biocontrol upon the sport fishery, water quality and primary productivity.
