Abstract

At one time south central Iowa produced large amounts of coal for domestic and industrial purposes. Mahaska County is one of several south central Iowa counties dotted with debris piles, remnants of that era. The general coal removal procedure at that time was to strip off the overburden covering the coal, remove the coal, and then move on to other deposits. This process left mounds of overburden and pits scattered throughout the countryside.
