Abstract

The West Fork Des Moines River at Estherville totals 1,372 square miles. A U.S. Geological Survey stream flow gage is located at Estherville and flow records are available back to 1951. During the period since 1951 the average river flow has been 271cfs and the seven day, ten year low flow less than 0.1cfs. The entire reach of the West Fork Des Moines River from the Des Moines River (near Humboldt) to the Iowa-Minnesota state line is classified for aquatic life use and is therefore regulated by both the general and specific water quality criteria of Iowa Water Quality Standards.
