Abstract

The combination of increased reporting of Iowa birds , the critical examination of all old records, and the new standardized list of North American birds made this an appropriate time to prepare a new book on the birds of Iowa. This volume is not intended to be a guide to bird identification. There a re several well i11sustrated, widely distributed bird guides already available that fill that need (Robbins et a l. 1966; Peterson 1980). Rather, this book is intended to provide an up-to-date summary of Iowa's, emphasizing the status, habitats, and seasonal occurrence of the bird species reported in Iowa. It also attempts to relate Iowa's avifauna, and especially the vagrant species , to the avifauna of the surrounding states . In some cases, difficult identification problems are discussed, especially of species that are not sufficiently covered in some of the field guides.
