Abstract

Thousands of juvenile titles are published each year, but few will survive "the test of time". We have therefore, attempted to provide a list representative of the universal themes in literature, and designed to expose young readers to a wide variety of the genre found in drama, poetry, folklore, nonfiction and fiction. No attempt has been made to enumerate all the good literature available in the classics, modern classics and potential classics. We hoped rather to offer a bibliography of titles which are examples of the literature of today and yesterday which are reviewed as worthwhile reading. We have tried to make our list long enough to provide many choices. There was no thought on our part that any student should expect or be expected to read all of these titles. We hope, however, that our list will assist teachers and students in improving the breadth and quality of reading in Iowa's upper elementary grades.
