Abstract
In a series of prosaic, factual reports on the ichthyological surveys conducted by himself and his a sociates, Meek (1889-1894; Jordan and Meek, 1885; Call, 1892) wrote the opening chapter in the history of Iowa fishes. At the same time he laid the foundation on which future students might attempt to reconstruct the course of fish-population change in the waters of the North American prairie. That Meek's inquiry was not conducted before the prairie sod was broken
