Abstract
This report is the first of several publications from a major research project initiated in the fall of 1976 by the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station at Iowa State University with the cooperation of University Extension. The objective of this report is to provide a profile of Iowa farms and farm families in 1976 obtained from the sample survey of Iowa farms and farm families. The most important characteristics of this population are described by a measure of central tendency and a frequency distribution. A few cross tabulations of characteristics of farms by size are also reported. This ' report may stimulate as many questions as it answers, but it will be useful to those who want a summary picture of Iowa agriculture in 1976.
