Abstract

No one knows how much business places lose to customers who steal merchandise. There is no doubt that it is a considerable amount, but it is not possible to determine just how much, for there are many causes of inventory shortage other than shoplifting. However, we do know that a lot of shoplifters are caught and that a lot more get away with it. In many cases, the owner of a store may only know that he is not making a profit. But because of poor inventory or accounting practices, he may not know why. Even with a good inventory and accounting system there are many reasons for inventory shrinkage other than shoplifting.
