Abstract

By authority of a Presidential Letter, the Iowa Historical Records Survey was initiated in October 1939 as a State-sponsored project, under the Work Projects Administration, and is now a unit of the Research and Records Projects of the Professional and Service Division; it continues the program initiated by the Historical Records Survey, a part of Federal Project No. 1, which was discontinued in September 1939. The Iowa Survey is under the official sponsorship of the State of Iowa Board of Trustees of Libraries and Museums, with Mr. Ora Williams, Curator of the Iowa State Department of History and Archives, acting as the sponsor's agent and technical director. In addition to the Manuscript Survey (as distinct from public records) the Survey has undertaken the work of inventory of: American Imprints, Church archives, City Archives, County Archives, and State Archives. These Inventories and Guides will do more than give a mere listing of records in the before-mentioned units of the program. They also will give an historical and legal background. In other words, the completed publications will constitute encyclopedias as well as bibliographies of every inventory in the whole or the program. This volume represents a preliminary edition of the Guide to Depositories of Manuscript Collections in the United States - Iowa, one of a series of fifty volumes.
