Abstract
States and other agencies delegated to perform air monitoring under the Clean Air Act are required to examine their networks annually to verify that they meet federal requirements (Appendix A). These requirements1 include the number and type of monitors operated and the frequency of sampling. Certain monitors in the network, known as State and Local Air Monitoring Stations (SLAMS), are required by federal regulations and discontinuing a SLAMS monitor requires concurrence from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (Appendix B). Special Purpose Monitors (SPMs) provide important additional air quality information (such as background concentrations for permitting activities2,3), but changes to the SPM network do not require concurrence from EPA.
