Abstract

In 2008 the IGS conducted a hydrogeological investigation of the Cretaceous System in a 16 county area of northwest Iowa (Figure 1). This study also included a three-dimensional groundwater flow model to evaluate the sustainability of the Cretaceous System, and more specifically, the Lower Dakota aquifer (Gannon et al., 2008). The lateral extent of the Cretaceous system actually extends well beyond the original 16 county area but the discontinuous nature of the sandstone prevented the development of a three-dimensional model in this region.
