Abstract

The official trustee of Iowa's history, the Iowa State Historical Department is the state agency with the responsibility and authority to collect, preserve, interpret, and disseminate Iowa's past; encourage scholarly research in Iowa history; work with other agencies to insure the proper teaching of Iowa history in the state's schools; serve as a reference source for other governmental agencies; operate the State Archives; and advocate the preservation, stewardship, and responsible use of Iowa's historical resources.
