The testers met with the same loan officer 15 minutes apart and the white tester was quoted a lower interest rate than the African American tester.

Housing:

The testers met with different managers. The African American tester was told that they just had a one-bedroom available and it was probably too small for the tester and spouse. The African American tester was told to check back later. The white tester was told about two one-bedroom apartments. The white tester was not told that the one-bedroom would be too small for the tester and spouse. The white tester was also told about several furnished efficiencies the tester could rent until something bigger opened up.

Familial Status:

Test 1

The tester posed as a single parent with a child and inquired about a one-bedroom apartment. The manager told the tester, "Ok. I, see it's just a one bedroom. And I don't know as it would be big enough for. The bedrooms are real large but my experience a child should have their own bed. Their own bedroom." The manager added, "You probably would be better off just. See if you couldn't find something that would have two bedrooms instead of just one. I wish I had something for you. But I sure don't."

A second tester posing as a married couple with no kids inquired about the one-bedroom apartment and was not told that it would be to small for them.

Test 2

The tester posed as a single parent with a child and inquired about a one-bedroom house. The owner told the tester at the beginning of the call that the house would be nice for a couple or single person. The owner did not discourage the tester after learning that it would be the tester and her child.

Test 3

The tester posed as a married person with two kids and inquired about a two-bedroom apartment. The manager told the tester she probably needed a three-bedroom apartment rather than a two-bedroom.
