Local Commissions. There are 22 local human rights commissions in the state of Iowa. These city and county commissions, created by local ordinances, exist independently of ICRC. Although not branch offices of ICRC, the local commissions interact with and work cooperatively with the Commission on case processing and on advocacy and public awareness of civil rights issues.

In Fiscal Year 1988, nearly 14% of ICRC's resolved complaints were settled or investigated by local commissions.
