All passed but one credit test, and in that test the testers met with different personal bankers, which could in part explain the possible different treatment. The African American tester waited 19 minutes before meeting with a personal banker. The white tester waited 5 minutes. Both testers were asked if they had accounts with the bank and both responded no. The white tester was told that the interest rate for his car loan would be a quarter percent lower if he opened an account with the bank and had his payments automatically withdrawn from the account. The African American tester was not told about the reduction in rate for opening an account. The white tester received an offer to get pre-approved and the African American tester did not.
