Section 1. Section 279.3, unnumbered paragraph 1, Code 2001, is amended to read as follows:
At a regular or special meeting of the board held in July or August prior to or on August 15

The board shall appoint a secretary who shall not be a teacher employed by the board but may be another employee of
the board. The board shall also appoint a treasurer who may be another employee of the board. However,
the board may appoint one person to serve as the secretary and the treasurer.
Sec. 2. Section 279.33, Code 2001, is amended to read as follows:
279.33 ANNUAL SETTLEMENTS.
At a regular or special meeting held not later than August
15
on or after August 31 and prior to the organizational meeting held after the regular school
election, the board of each school corporation shall meet, examine the books of and settle with the secretary and
treasurer for the year ending on the preceding June 30, and transact other business as
necessary. The treasurer at the time of settlement shall furnish the board with a sworn
statement from each depository showing the balance then on deposit in the depository. If the
secretary or treasurer fail to make proper reports for the settlement, the board shall take action
to obtain the balance information.
